Step 8.2: Stop, Collaborate + Listen

To paraphrase MC Hammer, paying it forward is your best career insurance.

Remember that random LinkedIn message that changed everything for you? The coffee chat that opened an unexpected door? The introduction that led to your breakthrough?

Now it’s time to become that person for someone else. It’s your turn.

Without the kindness of random strangers, who knows where I’d be. Regulars in the bars & restaurants where I worked opened doors for me that got me my start. And many, many others have made life-changing introductions for me.

This isn't just about karma or "giving back." It's about building your career's strongest safety net.

This is what I chose to do a decade ago by making it priority to help others with their careers. Every week, a significant people either are introduced to me as someone who can help them, or they reach out to me directly. I’ve taken time away from other things to listen and help wherever I can.

But now that it has gotten to a point where I can no longer answer every email or message, I’ve prioritized writing this Playbook so that I can help more people.

Think about your journey: You learned which advice actually works. You discovered which strategies are outdated. You found out which approaches get real results. You know what really happens behind the hiring scenes. You now understand the unwritten rules.

That knowledge is gold to someone still struggling through their search.

But here's the real power move: Helping others accelerates your own growth. Every time you share insights, you refine them. Every time you make introductions, you strengthen your network. Every time you open doors for others, you discover new rooms.

The market doesn't just reward success – it rewards those who multiply it.

Start small: Answer that DM asking for advice. Make that introduction you wish someone had made for you. Share what you learned, not just what worked. Be the guide you needed six months ago.

Remember: The strongest professional networks aren't built on transactions, but on genuine impact. Because your next opportunity might come from someone you help today.

Your Playbook:

  • Who could benefit from what you just learned?

  • How are you going to actively help others?
