Our careers define us.
They shape our identity and dominate our time—physically, virtually, and mentally. Within minutes of meeting someone, you know what they do for a living. That's how central our work is to our lives.
Because our careers are so crucial, we obsess over finding the ideal path—a job we're passionate about, in a company that values us, surrounded by inspiring colleagues. A recent American Express study found that while 60% of people consider themselves successful, 83% say they’re "a work in progress."
Success in today’s Innovation Economy is tougher than ever. Over half of the Fortune 500 has disappeared in the last 15 years. The only constants are uncertainty and relentless change. The pace of technology, driven by giants like Amazon, Meta, Apple & Google, as well as disruptive startups, insatiable financial markets, investors & geopolitics forces every company to constantly reassess its position, business model, and competitive edge. What creates success today can become tomorrow’s vulnerability.
“People have a voracious appetite for a better way, and yesterday’s ‘WOW’ quickly becomes today’s ordinary."
- Jeff Bezos, CEO / Amazon
We've shifted from a world of lifetime employment to one where 2-5 year stints are the norm. Where careers are more like playlists than epic novels. Change, both voluntary and involuntary, is a constant in every career. And let’s face it, change is hard. It’s stressful, disruptive, and takes us out of our comfort zones.
But here's a secret: we’re built to adapt.
Life itself is defined as “the ability to grow and respond to change.” Over my 30+ years in the global Innovation Economy, I've seen that everyone goes through career transitions. No one is immune to this. Today’s rockstar can be tomorrow’s job hunter. The people who are able to consistently grow and flourish are the ones who understand how to surf the waves of change that affect us all.
“If you don’t like change, you’re going to like irrelevance even less.”
- General (Ret.) Eric Shinseki, United States Army
Whether you have an MBA from a top school, are a surgeon, a CEO's child, or hold a leadership role, things will happen beyond your control and force involuntary change. Sometimes, we seek change ourselves, looking for new opportunities. Either way, transitions force us to redefine ourselves. They can be emotionally tougher than the actual job. Job searches are soul-crushing: waiting for responses, not knowing where you'll land next, feeling out of control.
What if change weren’t something to be afraid of, but instead something to look forward to? What if a time of transition could instead become a chance to reinvent ourselves and transform our careers?
Transitions open windows to change lanes, take big leaps, and rethink our paths. Yet, many people miss these opportunities, opting instead for the safety of the familiar. They don't know where to start or how to take the first step. Because we’re never taught how to manage our careers. We learn job skills but not career navigation. HR departments and outplacement firms often miss the mark, stripping away our individuality. Van Morrison was right: there's "no guru, no method., no teacher."
I aim to change that. I want to help you turn change into opportunity and give you the confidence to turn and face the strange.
“Change is neither good nor bad. It simply is.”
- Don Draper / Mad Men
As a strategist and lifelong agent of innovation, I’m on a mission to help people reach the next level in business, career, and life—faster.
