Step 7.5: There’s Always An Unlocked Door
Whether its a side or back door, there’s always another way into the company of your dreams. Here’s your Playbook.
The front door to your dream company is probably locked. The good news? There are dozens of side doors, back doors, and secret passages. And they're usually unguarded. And unlocked.
Here's the truth about breaking into companies: While everyone else is fighting through applicant tracking systems and HR firewalls, the smart ones are already inside, adding value.
Your Playbook:
Start freelancing for them. Even a small project gives you internal allies and insider knowledge. Every deliverable is a job interview they don't know they're conducting.
Become their most insightful observer. Write detailed analysis of their industry challenges. Share thoughtful commentary on their company updates. Be the person who clearly understands their problems – and might have solutions.
Join their ecosystem. Their vendors, partners, and customers are all potential entry points. Sometimes the best way in is through the companies they trust.
Create value before you ask for value. Host events their employees attend. Start a community newsletter they find useful. Build a tool that solves a problem they have.
Remember: Getting hired is about proving value. Side doors let you prove it before they're even looking.
The market rewards those who find creative ways to be valuable. Because sometimes the best way to get through the front door is to skip it entirely.
